Atari's Star Raiders to Be Remade

The 1979 space combat simulator remake is coming to the PC, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360.

Atari has recently announced that the remake of one of its classic games is official, and will be released in early 2011.

The new Star Raiders game is being developed by Incinerator Studios. It will still have galactic tactical maps and other features from the original, but will contain many upgrades. The graphics will of course be improved, and it will have a new episodic storyline. Players will be able to customize their spaceships and play online in either co-op mode or battling each other.

In an interview with GameSpot, Atari producer Jonathan Moses explained the decision to remake Star Raiders:

"Star Raiders was such an amazing game for its time. Epic dogfights in space, a galactic map that gave players an open world to explore--all on the Atari 2600. There have definitely been other games that have built on this formula, but Star Raiders was the first."

For fans of the original Star Raiders, Incinerator Studios president Joel Goodman said that it may be included in the remake as an unlockable bonus.
